This week, Sharp Europe published a survey of 2,500 SME leaders detailing how artificial intelligence is reshaping the workplace. The real barrier to AI return on investment isn't the technology, but the 35% of staff who feel threatened by it. If your team is quietly ignoring your new tools, they're likely afraid of looking obsolete.

The 35% anxiety bottleneck

Sharp Europe surveyed 2,500 SME leaders across 10 markets to understand the gap between buying AI tools and actually getting value from them. The numbers show a stark divide between management enthusiasm and workforce reality. While 72% of UK SME owners now trust AI more than they did last year, their teams are quietly struggling.

According to the data, 35% of leaders report their staff are anxious about lacking the right technical skills. Another 33% say employees are actively avoiding AI because they fear looking lazy or taking the "easier" route at work.

Despite 64% of owners claiming AI is fully embedded in their daily operations, only 39% have actually trained all their employees on how to use these tools. This leaves a massive gap. Management buys the software to keep up
